Art In Our Area

20 Elements, Joel Shapiro
Street Scene, Gugger Petter
Ad Astra, Mark di Suvero

Corridor Pin, Blue, Claes Oldenburg
Check out these famous artworks that are on view at Northpark Center, it is really an outstanding place to view art! Take some time and notice Gugger Petter's work behind the check out counter in Nordstrom's shoe department (she also weaves with paper). The cool Oldenberg in the garden courtyard. Joel Shapiro's work outside of Nordstrom, and Mark Di Suvero's sculpture by Forever 21. Next time you are heading to the mall, take a few minutes and really notice the things surrounding you.

I have lived in Dallas for over 30 years and visited Northpark often during that time period. Before the Nasher Sculpture Center was created, the Nashers exhibited their world class collection at the mall! There we were, walking past famous art pieces without really appreciating them. When the Nasher Sculpture Center was opened, it was immediately a world class museum because the Nashers had the most extensive collection of modern art and sculpture in the world. Only after the Center opened did I realize how generous they had been, sharing their love with the public in such an open way. I am thrilled that they did not give their collection to some other institution (and they were wooed by many for it), but instead chose to build their own museum to house and display their incredible art collection. Plus, modern sculpture happens to be one of my favorite periods and forms of art!
